The Mississippi Department of Education also will kick off new career education initiatives this year, along with the expansion of high school diploma options to include five certificates. The movement isnt just taking place in Mississippi, though. James Stone, director of the National Research Center for Career and Technical Education, said a national interest in career and technical education has really been generated in the last four years. Its driven in large part by the past 30 years of preparing kids to go to traditional colleges, and that hasnt been working, Stone said. It is, nationally, something that has sort of taken hold.
